Players of the Game: Central vs. Brawley (Girls Soccer)
Brawley Wildcats strike early and control the match from the start.
The Wildcats got on the board in the 25th minute when freshman Luna Aguilera found the back of the net to give Brawley a 1–0 league lead. Aguilera wasn’t done. Before the half, she struck again, continuing to make waves as a ninth-grader and giving Brawley momentum heading into the break.
Later in the first half, senior captain Kaylene Ojeda capitalized on a rebound, finishing a header after a save by Central’s keeper to extend the Wildcats’ lead. Brawley went into halftime up 3-0, backed by a defense that was nothing short of smothering.
Defensively, #10 Melissa Ortega (C) and #18 Enya Rosales anchored a Wildcats back line that limited Central to only a handful of shots on goal in the first half, using speed and positioning to shut down scoring chances.
Central made adjustments in the second half, getting more looks on goal and holding Brawley scoreless, but the Wildcats’ defensive effort proved to be the difference in the match.
Looking ahead, it’ll be interesting to see what happens on January 30, when the Wildcats travel to Tiger country to face Imperial. The two teams have already split games this season, and with talented freshmen on both sides.
VSN also wants to commend Coach Pancho (Central) and Coach Hugo (Brawley) for the sportsmanship and effort shown by both squads, with players hustling from start to finish.
